General Education

To advance the overall mission of Clean Memphis, to make Memphis cleaner, greener, and more sustainable, the Clean Memphis Education Team partners with schools throughout the city to provide engaging environmental education. Working directly with teachers and students, the aim of the program is to offer environmentally-themed presentations that are hands-on, student-centered, and bring to life some of the aspects of the local environment to create a sense of place. This free programming is designed to reinforce existing standards presented in schools throughout Shelby County. By forming lasting partnerships with schools, Clean Memphis seeks to go beyond the guest speaker platform and offer programming that works in each unique school setting.

Clean Memphis offers free environmental education for students in grades K - 12 for a variety of topics including:

  • Energy
  • Water
  • Recycling
  • Landfills
  • Resource Use
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Air Pollution
  • Climate Change
  • Ecology
  • Biodiversity
  • Recognizing Environmental Assets and Liabilities in Your Neighborhood
  • And more!

Curriculum is offered through three main programs:

  1. Sustainable Schools Challenge
  2. Nonconnah Corridor Education and Engagement Project
  3. Recycling!
