If you’re familiar with McKellar Lake, you know how bad the trash situation is there. If you aren’t, you should come volunteer just to see it. A large portion of the trash that finds its way onto the streets of Memphis gets swept down storm drains that drain into Nonconnah Creek. Nonconnah Creek, in turn, empties into McKellar. The flood this summer conveniently placed most of this trash on the banks of the lake, so there’s plenty of work to be done. We’ll be cleaning up and recycling what we can.
The cleanup will start at 8am and end around 10. The entrance for parking is at the corner of Jack Carley Causeway and W Trigg Ave (see map below). You’ll see cars parked on the other side of the tracks there. You’ll want to wear/bring: Long pants, hard soled shoes/boots (absolutely NO sandals or open-toed shoes), a water bottle (we will have some water available), bug spray, and an attitude to take care of some serious trash.
Clean Memphis is supporting the great efforts of the University of Memphis and City Beautiful on this cleanup, which they’ve been conducting monthly. If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, email Colton at ccockrum@memphis.edu Hope to see you Saturday!
