This year, the growing Clean Memphis Education team is taking on more schools than ever, including the new Compass Community Schools (formerly Jubilee Schools). With a focus on service learning, Clean Memphis is bringing curriculum into the classrooms in five of Compass’ K-8 schools located across the city.
Working with teachers in the schools, we are helping fourth graders understand humanity’s impact on the environment and how to make sure their impact is beneficial. In addition to participating in hands-on environmental science activities, students at Compass Orange Mound (formerly St. John’s School) recently participated in their first service learning project!
Fourth graders partnered with students from Christian Brothers University to beautify Orange Mound and mark 16 storm drains in the neighborhood. These labels ensure that local residents are more aware of the “secret” of storm drains- they flow directly into the Mississippi River, so litter needs to stay OUT. Be sure to visit our Facebook and Instagram pages to see pictures from this special project.
Clean Memphis is excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Compass schools as well as schools across Shelby County- public, independent, and charter!
