What is the Memphis Food Waste Project and why should you care?!
Most people in the city of Memphis are unaware that we have a food waste problem… in the city and the nation. Currently, 40% of the food that is grown or produced in Memphis is wasted. Nearly 38% of the food waste that hits the landfill is coming from our kitchens. We’re wasting hard-earned money and contributing to landfill pollution by producing unnecessary methane gas. Again, most of us are unaware that we are a part of this problem. At Clean Memphis, we’re optimistic we can turn this around!
Our goal is to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030! Yep, that’s a big goal and we need your help to do it.
How can you help?
Participate in our city-wide Food Waste Audit. Our Education Team developed a fun, easy, and informative project-based lesson for all age levels. Research shows the mere act of tracking your food waste can result in up to a 20% reduction in wasted food! So let’s save some money, some natural resources, educate ourselves and our children, and help save the food!
What do you need?
- 1 to 3 weeks of commitment (tracking your food waste)
- The Clean Memphis Food Waste Diary (available in the Clean Memphis Google Classroom below)
- A small kitchen scale (or measuring cups)
- Can-do attitude
