Wasted Food = Wasted Opportunity
We have a problem with food. In the U.S., we waste up to 40% of food grown for human consumption. Most of this food ends up in landfills where it gives off methane gas that is driving climate change. Additionally, in Memphis nearly one in five residents is food insecure. We’re throwing away the solution to two problems and creating new ones.
We’re Addressing the Problem
The Memphis Food Waste Project is designed to address these issues. Through education, we can train people to prevent food waste. With clear guidelines and communication, we can help increase donation of local food. With outreach and community partners, we can increase composting so that we can grow even more healthy food in Memphis. The opportunities for greater food security, better waste management, cost savings, and creative meals are within reach.
Our Advisory Council, Task Force, and Clean Memphis team members are working hard to ensure that Memphis captures its food resources as fully as possible.
