This month our community spotlight focuses on one of our longest standing friends and supporters: Tanja Mitchell (pictured above, right), Director of Community Engagement for The Works, Inc. For 20 years, Tanja has been working to improve communities throughout Memphis and Shelby County.
Through employment with the City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development as well as the Cooper Young Community Development Corporation, Tanja found her niche in community development and engagement. A field trip to the Uptown Hope XI redevelopment site led her to both a position with the developer and a community that she proudly calls home.
Tanja has partnered with Clean Memphis on a multitude of projects over the years, and she has always impressed us with her ability to imbue spaces with energy and activity. From a front-porch music series in Uptown to yoga and exercise boot camps at MLK Park in South Memphis, Tanja brings people together. She is passionate about people and places, and she believes that every citizen deserves to live and play in communities that are safe, decent, and satisfying.
